In 1951, Ruth Orkin travels to Italy and in Florence meets an American art school student Nina Lee Craig, who becomes the heroine of both this photo and many other works by Orkin.
This photo is one of a series called “Don’t be afraid to travel alone”, which tells about what young women, tourists who come to Europe in the post-war years, have to face. This frame is the most recognizable in the portfolio of Ruth Orkin, it brought her worldwide fame.
