Vogue France, May, 1970

For one of Guy Bourdin’s most famous photographs, published in the may 1970 issue of Vogue France, French model Louise Despoyntes posed. Superimposed on each other several similar pairs of hands with the same nail color create the illusion of multiplication, giving a surreal character to the image. While working on this shot, Guy Bourdin was inspired by a 1932 shot of his teacher Man Ray, in which he used a similar technique of repeatedly duplicating an image element.
