The author’s approach to photography is cinematic, which gives the images characteristic of gloss an atypical mystery. With this approach, inspired by the work of many filmmakers, most notably Stanley Kubrick, Piel expanded the boundaries of the genre. The heroines of his photos were models who in the 1980s became real stars of their time. In 1986, he did a shoot for Vogue USA with Tatjana Patitz and Laetitia Firmin-Didot. The photographer was always interested in models who were or could become Actresses in the frame, rather than blindly following the photographer’s instructions.
